You don't look like a feminist...

So last week I visited my cousins for my uncle's birthday. You dont know my uncle so heres a quick description. He is a homophobic, yellow-dog republican, that is still waiting for the "rise of the Aryan Nation" -catch my drift?- ok well because of our complete lack of anything in common we tend to stick to very basic conversation like weather, or school. Well... After spending a half hour explaining why something like Gender studies is a viable subject, I moved on to something else, giving up on trying to penetrate his thick thick skull. A little later an inevitable silence fell on the room. My uncle looked at me and said -for real he said this- you aren't going to turn into a "hippie feminist" (like those two things go hand-in-hand) I said, holding back laughter, that I believe all women who feel like they deserve equal rights and treatment are feminists whether they know it or not. He was quiet for a while then said -really- "i've never seen a feminist with a girls haircut" I laughed out loud in his face, I seriously couldn't hold it in. I just said he needed to look harder. But anyways I found this cartoon and it made me laugh and reminded me of my ignorant roots.

Alright, maybe I missed something. Wasn't it in 1996 that Obama was quoted in a questionnaire filled out for a Chicago LGBT newspaper, saying, “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.” Obama now says that he opposes gay marriage, although he supports civil unions and has come out against a federal ban on gay marriage. Who is he trying to look good to? What has changed about the gays in 14 years? In 2008 he told pop Christianity pastor Rick Warren, "I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian ... it is also a sacred union. God's in the mix." Is God in the mix now? or is Pastor Warren in the mix? It seems like Obama's retorts depend on his listeners. I understand that in 2008 he was running for presidency and was striving to make a positive impression, but his self contradiction couldn't have been more blatant. It seems though that the only people who recognized this contradiction are the lgbt that it impacts. What do we do now? surely not vote for him.. oh wait yeah we did.
